How to Prepare for Indian Economic Service (IES)?
Most IES toppers confirm that preparing for the Indian Economic Service Exam follows a structured 4-step approach:
Step 1: Understand the Indian Economic Service Syllabus & Sources
Go through all topics mentioned in the official UPSC IES notification.
Decide which sources (books, web resources, etc.) you would use to cover each topic in the Indian Economic Service Syllabus.
For some topics, you may need to rely on multiple sources, including web searches.
To judge the depth required for each topic, analyse Indian Economic Service PYQs (Previous Years’ Questions) carefully.
Sit down calmly and observe what kind of questions have been asked from each topic over the years.
Step 2: Make Precise Notes
Create well-structured, precise notes for all topics mentioned in the IES Syllabus. Include important PYQs also.
If you prefer underlining in books instead of making separate notes, ensure those markings are crisp and easy to revise from.
Note: We do not provide PDF notes. Candidates are expected to make self-written notes from the video lectures. Maintain separate notebooks for different subjects.
Purpose of Notes: To help you with Step 3 – Revision.
Step 3: Revision – The Most Crucial Step
You must revise all notes at least 7–10 times to ensure retention.
Why so many rounds of revisions?
The IES Exam involves writing 6 papers on 3 consecutive days – with no day gaps between papers.
You will not get adequate time for revision during the exam.
Ideally, you should have revised the entire syllabus so many times that you can revise it one more time within just 1–2 days.
How to Achieve This:
After each revision round, the time taken for the next round reduces.
Practice Active Recall:
After revising a topic, try to recall it with notes kept aside.
At night, mentally run through what you remember before sleeping.
During morning/evening walks or travel (e.g., in the Metro), try to recall your notes.
If you miss something, go back and revise again.
With each round of revision, your retention improves. Reach a stage where you remember the entire content of all subjects on a single day.
Step 4: Practice Answer Writing
Many candidates ignore this step in their first 1–2 attempts – and that’s a mistake.
Benefits of Answer Writing Practice:
Learn to complete answers within the stipulated time limit.
Improve presentation – introduction, conclusion, and structuring.
Practice drawing and explaining diagrams effectively, and quickly.
Pro Tip: Your initial answers will be imperfect – you may overshoot time or miss important points. That’s okay. After writing 200+ answers, you’ll improve significantly. If you make your mistakes before the exam, you will be conscious of not repeating them during the exam.
Prerequisite for Answer Writing: You should have prepared / memorised notes for at least a few topics first.
Test Series Support: If desired, enrol in a test series to get feedback on gaps in your answers.
